Has hygroscopic properties and quickly absorbs water from the air, so needed an airtight container to store
Highly soluble in water with heat evolution
Also dissolves in ethanol and methanol, though its lower as comparative to potassium hydroxide
Molten sodium hydroxide is a strong base, but due to its high temperature exhibits limited applications
Non-soluble in ether and other non-polar solvents
Sodium hydroxide solution leaves a yellow stain on fabric and paper
